indeed, fox ran with it all the way into the morning on "fox and friends". >> we watched president obama for 3 hchl years. i don't think he's governed in a race this way at all. i think that was going to be an issue. should have been an issue in '08. does anyone think president obama is more towards one race? i don't think so. >> roger rails would like to see you in his office. joining us right now, let's get to our panel here in denver, mike shira, "time" magazine, white house correspondent, who has the cover story in this week's issue. john harwood, cnbc chief white house correspondent, and holding it down in new york city, msnbc political analyst karen finney. john, are you there in the spin room. as you know, the spinning begins before either candidate has spoken. we've seen both parties attempt to deflate expectations. but isn't the biggest challenge for mitt romney, not what he plans to say tonight, but how he explains what he's already said, in particular, his derision for 47% of the people in this country? >> reporter: certainly, martin, he's going to have to address that and try

this is sort of the obama folks are going to console themselves this morning. this is the first presidential debate featuring an incumbent president where the challenger won. you go to reagan. you go to bush in '92. not clinton in '96. go to kerry in '04 and go to today. you got to say, is there something to it? where the incumbent sits there? annoyed he's on equal footing. out of practice, number two. and number three, sort of shackled in by how he knows the job is. not how he wishes the job was or what he was hoping it would be when he was a candidate. throw that all aside. mitt romney didn't just didn't just get himself a second look. the second most important thing that came out of the debate is it gave the republican party and it gave candidates down the ballot hope. something to believe in. and there was a lot of fear, a lot of fear from a a bunch of republicans here in denver saying i'm so relieved. i feared obama would win the debate and there would be a collapse of the republican ticket. >> there has to be something to it in the coming days. i look for

they went to bed upset, and a lot of democrats woke up angry this morning. angry at the president that he didn't finish the job. there was a lot of blood in the water. this could have been a moment when president obama would have finished a job because conservatives were upset with mitt romney. the republicans were upset with mitt romney. we know independents didn't care for mitt romney, and last night president obama gave him, you know, some much needed life support. >> so -- >> you know what, it's not over. >> of course. no, no, it's not over at all. we have two more debates, and obviously a vice presidential debate as well. anna, romney actually talked a lot about jobs. he kept going back to had it. he was very, very focused here, and he accused the president of killing jobs. it didn't even matter what the subject was. he kept bringing it back to jobs. was there anything that you felt that the president needed to focus on, that he could have made more inroads? >> he needed to focus, period, suzanne. he just was unfocused. he wasn't quite there. you know,

he can say whatever has been wrong, there's a good substantive case to be made against president obama, but he's never presented anything in the way of a detailed alternative that people can get their arms around. even at a paul ryan event this morning, a woman, a supporter got up in the crowd and said where are the details, what are you guys actually going to do? forget about his opponents' demanding it, his supporters are demanding it, saying give us something to vote for. >> ron, being perfectly hoppest, and you have already disclosed you helped prepare governor romney in 2008, are you not disappointed that he hasn't been more specific and more detailed, honestly? >> no, honestly i'm not. >> you're not? >> i'm not dispointed. it's about a vision for the kukt. if you want to talk about specifics, look at what president obama said. >> talk about mr. romney. if you're going to talk about the president, we will have to close the discussion now, but if you're -- >> this is a martin game here, of course. let's not beat up on the president -- >> we're just talking about mr. romney. >> the
